Q: Can I use acoustic bass strings?
A: Yes, all models of the NSDB are designed to accommodate full scale acoustic bass strings. Shown right is the correct anchoring for an acoustic string.
Q: What kind of strings are used?
A: NS Double Basses are equipped with ferrous flatwound strings ( roundwound available by request ) custom made to our specifications by J.D.Addario and Co. Violin and Cello are strung D'Addario Helicore. Please see our string replacement guide.
Q: Is the bridge height adjustable?
A: Yes, on all NS Instruments the bridge height is easily adjustable using the two adjustment screws located underneath the bridge and accessible from the back of the instrument. (See photos below: Left photo of bass, right photo of violin/cello) Turning the screws clockwise, you will raise the bridge; counter-clockwise will lower.
Q: How do I increase neck relief?
A: The Cello and Bass have an adjustable truss rod to control neck relief. The Violin and Viola are not adjustable. On all Basses and CR Cellos, the truss rod is accessed at the headstock, just above the nut. Using the supplied allen wrench, turn counter-clockwise to increase relief; clockwise to decrease. The truss rod in the US Cello is accessible from inside the body.
Q: How do I adjust the signal of my optional EMG magnetic pickups?
A: Adjacent to each individual pickup is an adjusting set screw. Loosen the set screw to adjust the pickup to the desired height. The US and EU models are spring loaded while CR models are not. On the CR models, the adjustment set screw is threaded into a small housing next to the larger pickup coil. Tighten the set screw to lock pickup height in place.
Q: How do I install my NS Endpin Conversion Kit?
A: Please follow these End Pin Conversion Kit instructions.
Q: If the output level is unbalanced when I change modes using the three position selector switch, what can I do?

A: Behind the top backplate, you will find the preamp. On the preamp you will find 4 trim pots. (See photos below: Left-Bass, Right-Violin/Cello) The top, individual pot is for the magnetic pickup signal. This does not pertain to the piezos. Below are three consecutive pots. From left to right they are: L-arco Mid-Pizz R-Blend.

Using a small screwdriver, carefully adjust them to preferred balance. You can easily check their balance by switching between modes as you adjust. They should all carry a similar signal strength.

Q: How do I balance the signal between the magnetic pickups and the Polar piezo bridge?
A: The top trim pot on the NSDB?s preamp controls the gain of the EMG system. You can easily match the signals by setting the switch in one position, and rotating fully the blend knob between magnetic only (fully counter-clockwise) and piezo only (fully clockwise) as you adjust the pot.
Q: Can my bass be tuned in fifths? My cello in fourths?
A: Yes, however, special strings will be required.
Q: Where can I find the serial number of my bass?
A: On the back, bottom side; next to where the string ball ends are located.
Q: On my cello?
A: With the back plate removed, it can be found on the bottom left corner of the cavity.
Q: Can I replace the B,E,A,D,G tuning on my 5 string with E,A,D,G,C?
A: Yes, the strings will mount in the same fashion without any nut and/or bridge modification.
Q: While "exploring under the hood" I may have disconnected something... Where does it go?
A: Please check this schematic.
